USAO's Kelly Brown Walks in the Footsteps of Te Ata

Although much has been written and recorded on the life of Chickasaw storyteller Te Ata, USAO’s Kelly Brown is literally following in the footsteps of the Oklahoma College for Women alumna with a trip to Loon Island in New Hampshire. She visited the island in Oct. 2010 as part of her ongoing research into Te Ata’s life.

Brown is determined to explore places Te Ata visited and lived.  “Her love of geography got me interested.  She and I share similar things. She had a love of nature and a desire to be one with nature.”

Graduate Andrea Brock Receives State and District Teaching Awards

Teacher and USAO graduate Andrea (Wood) Brock may be spending part of her summer expanding her trophy case after being named the OK-AR MAA Oklahoma Middle School Teacher of the Year and the Moore School District 2012 Teacher of the Year.

Two New Projects to Continue Work on Alumni House

Although the Stevens Alumni House renovation project was complete in 2009, work continues at the historic structure to improve the function and appearance of the building with two new projects announced in January.

Alumna Brittany Novotny Calls Running for Office a Great Experience

Calling running for public office “one of the best experiences of my life,” Brittany Novotny, a 2002 sociology graduate from the University of Science and Arts, came back to the college in the fall to speak to USAO students during the first in a series of alumni speakers this fall.

Nominations Needed for Young Alumni and Hall of Fame Awards

Although it is several months until the next USAO Alumni Hall of Fame and Young Alumni awards ceremony, the search is already underway for this year’s recipients. Nominations will be accepted through April 1.

2009 Graduate Sending Christmas Cards to Veterans

USAO alumna Ashley Hyde has a longer-than average card list during the holidays. In addition to family and friends, her list includes more than 20,000 cards to VA hospitals and care centers throughout the United States.

Robertson Hall 1964 Alumni Join For Florida Reunion

Members of the Robertson Hall class of 1964 gathered at St. Augustine Beach, Florida in 2010 for a mini-reunion at the home of Carol Fitzpatrick Toman. Attending the reunion were (front, from left) Mary Carol Phillips Scholz, Wendy Schneck Bartos, (back, from left) Liz Davis Madigan, Carol Fitzpatrick Toman and Sally Yengo Gutowsky. Plans were made for another gathering in 2012 at the home of Liz Davis Madigan and for the 50th reunion in 2014 at the university.

Alecia Gonzales: A Life of Giving

Known for her lifelong devotion to teaching and preserving the Kiowa language, author and educator Alecia Keahbone Gonzales died on April 22.

95-Year-Old Alum Says “Stay Awake and GIVE BACK!”

“Better late than never.”

This is the advice that Leona Metzger Ford, the oldest alum to ever serve on the USAO Alumni Association’s Executive Board, has for students and graduates. Ford turned 95 years old in June and continues to live this motto, recently accepting the invitation by the board to serve a two-year term for her district.

2011 Hall of Fame

A pianist, accompanist and vocal coach with a world-wide reputation, an award-winning author and political science professor and the recipient of the 2010-11 National VFW Elementary Teacher of the Year award will be inducted in the USAO Alumni Hall of Fame this year.

Sandra Soli: Poetry Makes Perfect

Born in Birmingham, England, Sandra Soli graduated from College High School in Bartlesville and entered the Oklahoma College for Women in 1959. Her memories of OCW, nearing the end of the first incarnation, are idyllic.

"The Nellie Sparks dorm room that my roommate Judy and I shared had water pipes climbing one wall," Soli remembered, "so we painted them green and installed fake ivy to 'grow' up the wall of our room"

Recent USAO Alumnus Putting His Education into Practice

JJ William Francais sits with a stack of old postcards and letters, a thoughtful look on his face that seems likely to erupt into a smile.

A 2010 USAO graduate with a bachelor’s degree in history and a minor in business, Francais has become an avid professional collector of historical memorabilia. His passion began when his senior seminar instructor, Dr. Lee Hester, associate professor of American Indian studies, helped him obtain an internship at the McClain County Museum in nearby Purcell.

Two OCLA Students, One OCW To Be Named to Hall of Fame

A Most Worthy Grand Matron of the Eastern Star, a social studies advocate and the chief executive officer of one of America's best hospitals will be honored this year as they are inducted into the USAO Alumni Hall of Fame.

USAO Alum Named 2010 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year

It's been more than 40 years since a Tulsa Public School teacher won the Oklahoma Teacher of the Year Award, but that changed last year thanks to a USAO alum. Brian Grimm, a 1996 graduate of USAO, was named the 2010 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year in September 2009.
