Two New Projects to Continue Work on Alumni House

Although the Stevens Alumni House renovation project was complete in 2009, work continues at the historic structure to improve the function and appearance of the building with two new projects announced in January.

The Alumni House Gardens Project is the result of the work of the USAO Beautification Committee. “The plan involves the installation of a sidewalk around the house which will outline professionally-designed flower beds,” said Eric Feuerborn, director of Alumni Development. “The sidewalk leading to the Alumni House, the front step and new walks around the house will be constructed in stamped, stained concrete.”

“The Gardens Project will dramatically improve the appearance of the house and provide a focal point of beauty for those entering the campus. It is a perfect next step in the evolution of the building.” Total cost for the Gardens Project is $15,000.

“We have more than half of the money committed for this project. Our goal is to complete the project by April in order to take advantage of the full spring growing season,” Feuerborn said. An outline of the project, including photos is available in PDF form online.

The second project this spring at the Stevens Alumni House is the installation of a chair lift from the first to the second story. “I was so excited when I heard that some of our alumni were interested in starting a fund drive for a chair lift. So much work and care has been invested in the upstairs and everyone should be able to enjoy it.

“At first, I didn’t know if this was even an option in the building, since the stairs have a landing and a 90 degree curve. I also was concerned that the lift would dominate or obscure the historic features of the home. After some research, we found chair lifts that address both these issues,” Feuerborn said.

Like the Gardens Project, the Chair Lift will cost approximately $15,000. An outline of the project, including photos is available in PDF form online.
