Well, hello there!

Allow me to introduce myself to those I haven’t had the privilege of meeting yet. They call me Dusty. I’ve recently started looking after our students here on USAO’s campus, cheering them on in their victories, guiding them through success and even acting as counselor when necessary. I think they call me a “mascot,” whatever that means. I’m just following in my Uncle Dan’s footsteps.

Sometimes the impact one man can make on the lives he touches is immeasurable.

That is certainly true for long-time USAO baseball coach L.J. Powell, who retired from coaching in 2009. Powell was named to the Oklahoma Coaches Association Hall of Fame this month. He previously was named to the Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2008.

McPherson was a member of the first basketball team at USAO in 1973 and has been associated with the program ever since.

“Feb. 23, 2002, my mom died after a 16-year battle with cancer,” she said, adding that her father died later that year. “That’s why I do it. So someone else doesn’t have to deal with this … It was terrible, and I lived 12 hours away.”

His time at USAO changed the course of one alum's life, leading him on a somewhat unexpected but successful path.

Rick McCormick, a 1979 USAO graduate, came to USAO to play basketball straight from a junior college in Texas. He came to play under Coach Archie Porter in 1977.

New coaches, new players and new philosophies meant a year of transition for many the USAO Drover sports teams.

But one team stood out during the 2009-10 season. Heading off to the first round of the National Tournament were Coach Jimmy Hampton and his men’s soccer team.
