Amid the stresses of making it to class in a timely fashion, it is easy to forget that the IDS core curriculum makes USAO what it is. While the liberal arts focus is what separates USAO from other public institutions in Oklahoma, it is the interdisciplinary approach of team teaching across disciplines that distinguishes it from other liberal arts universities, public and private, around the country.

As a junior in high school, Minnijean Brown Trickey made a difference. She set a standard and she fought for what she believed in. More than 50 years later, she encouraged USAO students to do the very same.

Food is something we often take for granted. For many, it comes in boxes, cans or wrapped in plastic. To others, though, food represents something more important than just the sum of calories and nutrition that can be wedged in between daily errands. For them, food is culture. Food is tradition and, in some cases, that tradition is on the edge of extinction.

In only 50 years of life, alumnus Brad Ableson influenced the nation’s military, advised U.S. President Bill Clinton and became a recognized voice in global religious reconciliation. Now his legacy will provide future generations of USAO students new opportunities to learn from his example.

Overcoming a strained hamstring or bum knee to get back on the soccer field is one thing, but one Drover soccer player has been working hard for a year and a half to get his game back up after undergoing invasive brain surgery in late 2008.

Lonnie Jourdan accepts his honorary bachelor’s in liberal arts at USAO’s spring graduation. Jourdan’s degree was the first-ever honorary degree given by the university.

The 17-member USAO Showband went to Nashville over spring break and all they brought back with them were good memories, lots of new skills and, of course, their newest CD. The Showband's CD, Nashville, Music City, was released in April.
